The Awful Truth
Grains are in the news due to price action. As of this morning, the daily trading limit in wheat futures was raised to 60 cents per bushel from 30 cents. “The limit will rise 50 percent, to 90 cents, on the next business day and another 50 percent on each subsequent day when two or more contracts in the same crop year close limit up.”
In the blog-before-you-think category, The Windbag was at it again:
New widened price limits at commodity exchanges seems to me to be facilitating a killing of the shorts as they are being squeezed with no mercy. Why weren't these limits raised a year ago? Who is benefiting? I think we know its not the hedge funds or the retail accounts who had been short?
Wrong. The Awful Truth is much simpler.
Wheat was trading at around 740 in November 2007. It traded to 1090ish last Friday. That is a 47?ncrease in three months. After trading had been locked-limit up for nearly a week, it was obvious the limit had to be raised to reflect the price increase in order to “to enable the markets to fulfill their price discovery and hedging functions,” the Commodity Futures Trading Commission said.”
Speculative interest was on the long side. They “outnumbered short positions by 24,701 contracts on the Chicago Board of Trade in the week ended Feb. 5, according to U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data. Net-long positions rose by 5,600 contracts, or 29 percent, from a week earlier.”
In February 2007, the price averaged around 470. If anything, limits should have been increased even more.
Woman’s Work is Worth … Less
Herman wrote:
I came across your web site and was very impressed with your work. I currently have other subscriptions (John Murphy and Arthur Hill …) that are costing me quite a bit. Is there a way to ease-in to your subscription? My wife is going kill me if I spend another $50/month. Also, you would make a good role model for my two daughters whom I would like to introduce your web site and the world of Trading.
Teresa replied:
If you are happy with John Murphy and Arthur Hill, just keep subscribing to their newsletters. One important thing you can teach your daughters is that men often value the work of women less and that they should never, ever give away anything of value for free. I mean, you would not dream of writing to John Murphy and Arthur Hill to “ease-in” to their newsletters right? But you want me to do that…sorry. My father taught me women were worth less than men, and it took me forever to learn that “nice” girls finish last.
Media Digest
Sorry for this big list. We saved too many stories from the last week. My favorite is the ECB announcement and press conference.
